POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies has an opening in our Philadelphia, PA office location for an Underwriter 2. May direct the work of others, requiring the ability to guide others and provide direction; must demonstrate strong communication skills and the ability to effectively direct Underwriting Support Specialists; relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals; performs a variety of tasks with limited supervision.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manage profitability and new business goals
  • Develop prospects
  • Negotiate price and rate
  • Review applications for insurance coverage, as well as reports from Loss Control Representatives and other information to determine if application is acceptable for the program(s) available
  • Demonstrate proficiency in underwriting new business accounts and renewal accounts timely and within underwriting authority levels established
  • Able to work effectively with Customer Service, Claims and Loss Control Representatives; team player
  • Maintain productive agency relationships and demonstrates effectual agency management
  • Participate in policyholder and broker field sales calls
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university.
  • EXPERIENCE: One to three years Underwriting experience and/or training.
  • LANGUAGE: Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations; ability to write reports and business correspondence; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.
  • MATH ABILITY: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
  • REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • TECHNICAL SKILLS: Knowledge of office operations, data entry, calculator, file management and workflow analysis.
  • COMPUTER SKILLS: Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel software; proficient in applicable databases, systems and vendor software programs.
  • CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES: None required.
