State Compensation Insurance Fund’s Legal Department is looking for a highly experienced attorney to fill our Attorney V vacancy within the Subrogation Unit to handle the most complex subrogation matters and trials in the subrogation department, and provide research, advice and counsel to the Legal leadership team, Claims leadership team and other business partners. The successful candidate will be responsible for handling, and appearing, on complex cases in various venues and jurisdictions in California, and occasionally out of state, for matters involving workers compensation issues, and Federal and State civil law.

POSITION SUMMARY
As an Attorney V, the successful candidate will handle the most complex, sensitive and difficult matters in the department.  As an Attorney V, you will be responsible for, but not limited to:
  • Competently and aggressively handling the most complex civil and workers compensation matters affecting State Fund's subrogation rights, in a timely, proactive manner
  • Developing strategies to address statewide and regional trends
  • Providing timely highly competent in-depth research, advice and counsel to the claims and legal leadership, members of the executive team, Board of Directors and other senior leaders on the most difficult, complex and  sensitive matters
  • Providing timely research and advice, along with serving as a resource, to claims and legal personnel and other business partners
  • Providing training to claims, legal and business partners, both one-on-one and in a group setting
  • Leading and collaborating on group projects and assignments within legal and with business partners
  • Serving as a backup to the Assistant Chief Counsel and to other Attorney Vs as needed
 
Required and Desired Skills/Experience
  • Thirteen years of legal experience in the practice of law*, three years of which must have been at a level of responsibility equivalent to an Attorney IV.  (Applicants who have completed nine years and six months of the required total legal experience including two years and six months of the required legal experience comparable to the Attorney IV class will be admitted into the examination but must complete the required thirteen years' total legal experience.) REQUIRED
* Experience in the practice of law or performing legal duties is defined as: (1) only that legal experience acquired after admission to any State Bar, or (2) experience as a judicial clerk for a federal court, California's state courts, or any other state's courts, to constitute experience in the practice of law. For an individual's judicial clerkship to qualify as experience in the practice of law or performing legal duties, the experience must have been gained after receipt of a Juris Doctor or equivalent degree.
  • Civil Liability, 3rd Party Liability, Civil Liability, or Personal Injury legal practice experience HIGHLY DESIRED
  • The ability to effectively and competently representing State Fund under the Master Agreement and consistent with the law and an organization’s approved policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • Extensive experience advising and counsel legal units, claims and internal business partners
  • Skilled at providing quality customer service in a timely manner by maintaining good customer relationships with internal and external business partners and stakeholders
  • The ability to maintain a high level of professionalism with State Fund, its insureds, its clients, and the legal community
  • Must be able to comply with the Code of Conduct
  • The ability to maintain a safe working environment
  • The ability to defend State Fund against fraudulent activities
