The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is exploring new policies that would entail verifying claims from contractors when they say they have clean safety records without a history of fines and penalties, according to a report by the San Francisco Chronicle.
The NBC affiliate for the Bay Area reported that Shimmick Construction, which was hired to work on the Twin Peaks tunnel restoration project, had a history of safety violations it had not disclosed. When bidding on the project, the company checked a box indicating it had no serious and willful safety violations in the last 10 years.
But in actuality, the company had been cited for at least 39 safety violations, according to the Chronicle’s report.
Paul Rose, a spokesman for SMFTA, said in an email to the newspaper that the agency will start looking into the backgrounds of contractors.
“Rather than rely on information from potential contractors, we are taking steps now to change the policy and ensure that we verify details in the pre-bid documents going forward,” Rose said.
