A Georgia doctor who falsified Department of Transportation medical exam forms used to certify commercial drivers was sentenced to 30 months in prison, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia said Friday.

Dr. Mark Griffis, of Eastman, accepted $50 payments from a drug and alcohol screener to falsely certify exam forms without actually examining the drivers, U.S. Attorney Bobby L. Christine said in a press release. The scheme allowed 271 drivers to renew their commercial licenses without undergoing appropriate medical exams, Christine said.

Screener Jo Carol White was sentenced to 15 months in prison earlier this year for her part in the conspiracy.

U.S. District Judge Dudley H. Bowen also ordered the 61-year-old Griffis to pay a $6,000 fine and serve three years of supervised release after his prison sentence. 

The investigation was initiated by the Department of Transportation Inspector General’s Office.
