New York City’s workers’ compensation costs have more than doubled since 2008 and reached a 10-year high of $25.7 million in 2017, according to a report in the New York Post.

Citing data from the city’s Law Department, the newspaper said the city’s workers’ compensation costs increased 109% since 2008. Last year, 18,604 city workers were paid workers’ compensation benefits, 20% more than 10 years prior. The average payout was $1,381, up from an average of $793 per claim in 2008.

Corrections claims have increased 219% since 2008, according to The Post. The union that represents corrections officers blamed violence in the city’s jails.

The number of Department of Education claims reached a 10-year high, with 3,388 claims, the newspaper said.

Police and Fire Department claims, on the other hand, have declined in the past 10 years.
