Your article quotes someone who says "weaning plans have to follow medically accepted guidelines." This is a very misleading statement that flows through the workers' compensation industry. In fact there are no medically accepted guidelines in any treatment protocol either evidence based or otherwise weaning patients from opioid, benzodiazepine, or hypnotic dependency. Just ask any addiction specialist. This area of medicine is new and emerging and we are a long way from determining the most effective way to wean people from these drugs. Experience shows for chronic pain patients, it can take up to three years or longer to wean someone from any one of these drugs, if at all. In every case, a treatment plan has to be patient-centered and cannot be vanilla flavored with one uniform standard applying to all patients.
