Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies, one of the largest insurers of California Workers' Compensation, is expanding in San Diego. BHHC is looking for experienced Workers' Compensation attorney in San Diego area. Our House Counsel attorney is responsible for handling a caseload of pending workers' compensation cases as well as making special appearances at depositions, trials and hearings before the Workers' Compensation Appeals Board. Must be able to handle all aspects of litigation. Very reasonable caseload with compensation commensurate with experience. Must be able to do all aspects of the job listed in the job description.
May direct and lead the work of others, requiring the ability to guide others and provide direction.  Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks with limited supervision. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.  Must demonstrate strong communication skills and the ability to effectively train other associates and clerks. Proficiently performs tasks, works autonomously and may act as a back up to the supervisor.

  • Review files and provide analysis of legal issues to claims;
  • By applying extensive legal knowledge, skill and ability,  zealously handle all phases of litigation and ethically represent the best interests of the client;
  • Direct cases to resolution/disposition;
  • Prepare, attend, and report on hearings and depositions;
  • Provide educational seminars and roundtables to the claims department as needed;
  • Draft pleadings, petitions, correspondence and documents;
  • Analyze and recommend litigation strategy on a case by case basis;
  • Perform legal research;
  • Communicate with company employees, the general public and court personnel.

  • EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:  JD or LLB from an accredited law school with five (5) years experience and admitted to The State Bar.
  • LANGUAGE ABILITY: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical manuals, or governmental regulations.  Ability to negotiate, write and interpret business correspondence, reports and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • MATH ABILITY:  Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.
  • REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Reliance on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • TECHNICAL SKILLS:  Knowledge of office operations, workflow analysis, and current technologies in telecommunications, data entry and file management.
  • COMPUTER SKILLS:  Knowledge of Microsoft word processing software; Microsoft spreadsheet software; and proficiency on applicable databases, systems and vendor software programs.
  • CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES: Valid driver’s license and membership in good standing with The California State Bar.
