This position is required to learn the fundamental functions of Loss Control. Under supervision, this position represents the company in meetings with customers and insurance brokers and their staff, including Producers, Account Managers, Claims Advocates, and Loss Control representatives. The Loss Control Trainee will successfully complete training within 12 – 18 months to master the skills and abilities to become a Loss Control Specialist. By the completion of training, the employee is expected to have knowledge, skills, and abilities to understand a wide range of occupational operations, identify employee exposures to workplace hazards, and ability to recommend appropriate controls for the identified exposures and hazards, as well as application of appropriate codes, laws, and regulations.
  • Successfully complete training and development program including classes developed by Loss Control, Claims, and Underwriting. 
  • Understand and apply standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the Loss Control field, as well as best practices in occupational safety and health. 
  • Understand and apply essential manuals and documents including A.M. Best’s Loss Control Manual and A.M. Best’s Underwriting Guide. 
  • Travel with and assist BHHC Loss Control Specialists in the field. 
  • Successfully complete workers compensation, risk management, and safety related classes. 
  • Begin to manage an assigned workload including: 
  • Conducting surveys and service visits to assigned accounts 
  • Assisting the insured in identifying key objectives to improve their risk management efforts. 
  • Providing consulting and training services to support the account, accomplishing loss control objectives. 
  • Monitoring the loss experience of the assigned book of business in order to deploy Loss Control resources appropriately. 
  • Preparing written reports and letters in accordance with the department expectations. 
  • Participate with the Loss Control team to develop and make presentations to clients, other BHHC employees, brokers, and Loss Control vendors
  • Education / Experience – Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) from four-year college or university. Degrees in related fields (Safety/Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health, Life Sciences, etc.) preferred but not required. 
  • Language Skills – Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write and critique detailed reports that describe the operations, exposures, and controls of a wide array of industries. Ability to write articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. 
  • Math Skills – Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. 
  • Reasoning Skills – Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables. 
  • Technical Skills – To perform this job successfully, an individual must have knowledge of office operations, data entry, and comprehension of the use of a calculator. 
  • Computer Skills – To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft word processing software; Microsoft spreadsheet software; Microsoft presentation software; and become proficient on applicable databases, systems and vendor software programs. Certificates and Licenses – GSP, OHST, ASP, IHIT preferred but not required.
