Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies has an opening in our San Diego location for a Technical Claims Manager. The Technical Claims Manager is responsible for the performance and effective operation of a team of Claims Professionals who handle our most complex files. The Technical Manager participates in Staff Training and assists other claims teams in developing general and specific claim resolution strategies. A minimum of seven years experience in Workers' Compensation is required.

  • Ensure that claims are managed in compliance with applicable statutes, regulations, case law, and Company standards, and that the unit achieves high scores on claim audits.
  • Ensure that the unit’s Claims Professionals produce successful claim outcomes by achieving prompt claim closures, high client satisfaction with claim services, effective claim cost containment, and achievement of the unit’s goals.
  • Ensure that claim reserves and settlements are appropriate and timely.
  • Assist in the direction of our most severe and complex claims.
  • Ensure the successful implementation of changes to the laws and regulations governing claims handling as well as to ongoing changes to the processes, tactics, and strategies of claims management.
  • Foster and guide the personal and professional development and growth of individual claims professionals of varying levels of experience to help them build successful and satisfying careers while producing excellent results in their work and exhibiting exemplary workplace behavior.
  • Serve as a role model for the Company’s culture by embodying the highest standards of collaboration, positive leadership, performance, behavior, and ethical standards.
  • Actively reinforce and support Company programs and initiatives including internal audit, training, and strategic and tactical innovation and improvement.
  • Ensure that performance and behavior issues are identified and addressed, including providing coaching to achieve improved performance as well as ensuring the effective application of the disciplinary process.
  • Ensure that exceptions, inquiries, escalated issues, and complaints are appropriately assessed and addressed.
  • Identify and communicate training needs, assist upon request with facilitating training topics, and continually reinforce adherence to the concepts and techniques taught during the training program.

  • Experience / Education – Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; or at least five years of relevant experience and training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior supervisory experience in workers compensation claims management is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Language Ability – Able to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, medical reports, bills, legal briefs, statutes, regulations, and court opinions. Able to write claim notes, summaries, reports, and business correspondence. Able to effectively present information and respond to questions with managers, clients, customers, and the general public, both in individual conversations and presentations to groups.
  • Math Ability – Able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Able to compute rate, ratio, and percent. Familiar with the time value of money and reducing future streams of payments to a present value. Familiar with the concept of statistical likelihood as the basis for calculating the value of a possible financial outcome.
  • Reasoning Ability – Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Able to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Computer Skills – Knowledge of Microsoft Office software. Able to quickly master proprietary and vended software applications.
  • Certificates and Licenses – Licensed to adjust workers’ compensation claims in one or more jurisdictions.
