The owner of a garage door company in the Atlanta-area has been charged with falsifying insurance coverage, the Georgia insurance commissioner announced this week.
Maria Estela Castillo, 34, of Lilburn, presented a proof of workers' compensation insurance to a subcontractor, claiming that her business was covered by Biltmore Insurance Agency. But an investigation showed the document to be false and that Biltmore never wrote a policy for the door company, according to a bulletin from the Insurance Department.
Castillo was booked into the Cobb County Jail and released on bond.
Insurance fraud in Georgia is a felony punishable by imprisonment up to 10 years, or by a fine of up to $10,000, or both. Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens urged businesses to verify that a contractor is licensed and insured before any work is done.
