Dave Roberts was given a 13% permanent disability rating and will receive a $12,250 settlement from the county paid out over roughly 40 weeks.

He agreed to drop another claim for psychological stress related to an October 2013 encounter with a mentally ill man who brandished a fork at him outside a Kearny Mesa restaurant where Roberts was headed to make a political endorsement.

Doctors agreed that Roberts' physical condition did not appear to be getting worse, and his pain was mild and manageable with medicine, physical therapy sessions and acupuncture.

San Diego County, which is self-insured, paid $22.3 million in workers' compensation benefits during the 2016 fiscal year.
