An Alabama man who collected federal workers' compensation benefits while working for the Republic of Botswana has been sentenced to home confinement and $25 in court costs.
John E. Carroll pleaded guilty last fall in federal court in Waco, Texas, to filing false information on 10 forms between 2012 and 2016, so that he could earn federal employee compensation benefits, according to court records and a news report.
During that time, he earned almost $40,000 in salary and benefits as a project coordinator for the Botswana government.
The investigation was led by the U.S. Department of Labor. Carroll was sentenced this week to eight months' home confinement, one year of supervised release, and must pay $25 in fees to the court, the reports said.
The indictment does not make clear how Carroll was injured, and other court records have been sealed.
