Former Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra was appointed in July by Gov. Dannel Malloy, the commission announced. He is now one of 16 commissioners who hold hearings to resolve disputes in workers’ compensation cases in eight district offices around the state.

Segarra, an attorney, was leader of the Hartford City Council in 2011 and was elevated to mayor after Mayor Eddie Perez was convicted on corruption charges and resigned. Segarra won an election the next year but lost in the Democratic primary in 2015.

Since 2016, Segarra has been of counsel at the law firm of Shimkus, Murphy and Rosenberger in Hartford, and has his own practice that handles some workers' comp cases, officials said.

Segarra also was corporation counsel for the City of Hartford in the 1990s and was a deputy state's attorney in the 1980s. He also was a social worker at a Hartford hospital and co-founded several organizations, including Hogar Crea Drug/Alcohol Treatment Center, Connecticut Latinas Achieving Rights and Opportunities, and the Hispanic Health Council.

In 2012 he was recognized with a service award by the University of Connecticut Law School Alumni Association. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Hartford and a law degree from the University of Connecticut.
