One of the nation’s largest insurance carriers says it’s the first to offer businesses ergonomics assessments using artificial intelligence.

The Travelers Cos. announced Monday that it will conduct virtual and on-site assessments using AI-based technology and ergonomic research, according to a company news release.

Assessors are expected to analyze smartphone videos of workers performing tasks to point out movements and positions that could cause injury.

An AI software then quantifies risk and creates a report so that ergonomics experts can prepare a plan to keep workers safe, according to the news release.

“Musculoskeletal injuries, often caused by poor ergonomics or workstation design, can lead to serious health issues that can impair an employee’s ability to perform certain tasks or require them to take time off to recover,” Marty Henry, senior vice president of risk control, said in a statement. “By using AI, we can reduce the time spent assessing problems from days to hours, enabling our specialists to focus their attention on developing tailored workplace improvements for our customers.”

The issue of ergonomics has grown during the COVID-19 pandemic, as more employees are working at home without in-person supervision.

Ergonomic corrections can cut down on workplace injuries and reduce workers’ compensation costs, according to Travelers.
