Car Washes, Manufacturers Shut Down Over Safety Violations

California regulators ordered four car washes in the Los Angeles area and three manufacturers in Orange County to shut down because of health, safety and workers’ compensation violations, the Department of Industrial Relations said Thursday.

The Labor Enforcement Task Force discovered that industrial water extractors used to dry towels did not fave functioning interlock devices to stop the machines when the door is unlocked or open. The task force issued orders prohibiting use to Pasadena Auto Wash, Baldwin Park Hand Car Wash, Star Auto Spa in El Monte and Fair Oaks Car Wash in Altadena.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health lifted the stop-work orders at Pasadena Auto Wash and Fair Oaks Car Wash after the machinery was repaired. The other two businesses remained under closure orders on Thursday.

The task force also ordered three manufacturing companies in Santa Ana to shut down for safety violations and cited two of them for not providing workers’ compensation insurance. Inspectors found that Maximum Security Safes, Trinity Window Fashions and Pierre’s Fine Carpentry were operating equipment that was not properly guarded. The orders were lifted when the hazards were corrected.

The task force also cited Trinity Window $3,000 and Pierre’s $1,500 for failure to maintain workers’ compensation insurance. The orders were lifted after the firms provided proof of insurance coverage.
