The New York State Workers' Compensation Board is trying to collect a $24,000 fine from the New England Patriots for not having workers' compensation coverage, according to a report by the Times Union in Albany.
The board reportedly says the football team failed to have workers' compensation coverage for its players in New York between June 1, 2023, and Sept. 22.
According to the report, the Patriots have payroll in New York and are therefore required by law to carry a work comp policy in the state. The Patriots travel to New York at least once a year to play the Buffalo Bills.
A spokesperson for the Workers' Compensation Board said the team was fined for not having comp coverage for 16 months and, according to the agency's record, "[T]hey remain out of compliance today."
The Patriots did not comment.
