Moore: NCCI Forum Shows Rate Change Disparities

The National Council on Compensation Insurance's Arizona State Advisory Forum is worth the time to view or read.

Usually, when I mention a certain state in articles and presentations, someone will say, "We do not have interests in that state.” Your company may not have interests in Arizona. As a side note, Sedona/Flagstaff is one of the best vacations one can imagine, including the vortexes in Sedona.

There are 36 chances that one of the forums covers your state. They are updated often.

But concentrating on one state is missing the point. Follow my logic train: NCCI takes the time and trouble to publish national charts for comparison.

Download the NCCI Arizona State Advisory Forum charts here. Page 16 contains the national comparison on rate increases and decreases nationally.

The largest rate decrease, surprisingly, comes from Virginia. I predicted that four years ago when the Dominion State established a workers' comp medical fee schedule.  Almost all states have one.

I am not sure why Hawaii had an 11.5% increase in rates. Is one of your states included in the chart? If so, you may want to go to the Forum and see how your state or states are doing in workers' comp.

I will likely look at the Hawaii State Advisory Forum in the next few weeks to see why Hawaii increased its rates so much more significantly than other states. Possibly a tourism boom due to COVID-19?

Your experience modification factor comes from the risk of companies that are similar to yours that operate in the same state. If you have a business in Montana, for example, that is the state that you should focus on for your workers' compensation comparisons.

One of the more positive notes from the Arizona forum is slide 15. The state’s economy is in a recovery mode. Excellent.
