Southern California applicants' attorney Elliot Berkowitz died Sunday at the age of 76.
He is survived by his two daughters, Dayna and Allison.
Berkowitz, who was a partner at Berkowitz & Cohen in Los Angeles, had practiced personal injury and workers' compensation law since 1977, one year after he earned his law degree from Glendale University College of Law.
He was actively involved with the California Consumer Attorneys Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association and the California Applicants' Attorneys Association.
He held positions ranging from treasurer to president of the Southern California Applicants' Attorneys Association from 1991 through 1994. Since 1995, he served in various roles with CAAA, including chairman for the education convention and director of education. He also served on CAAA's legislative committee and had been a director of education emeritus for CAAA since 2012.
"Elliott was a legend in CAAA," applicants' attorney Thomas Martin said in an email. "He contributed to our community on so many levels and helped educate our members for decades as the education chair."
A celebration of Berkowitz's life is being held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Mount Sinai Simi Valley, 6150 Mount Sinai Drive.
In celebration of his life, the family requests that you wear color and that men wear their favorite patterned tie in memory of his love of themed ties.
Following the celebration, shiva will be held at the Berkowitz household in Beverly Hills.

That is all very true and sums up my experiences with Elliot over the years. I am glad that I had the opportunity to learn from him during our encounters, and will always recall him as being an honest and professional gentleman.

Elliot was one of my favorite "adversaries" and a wonderful man. He was a fierce defender of workers' rights who walked like he talked. He will be missed greatly in our community. Amy Menkes Stoody, Esq.
